Give Away The Answers- Employee Theft

I was having a conversation with a peer of mine that runs his own business. He was telling me that he was not convinced that he should do employee theft training with his employees. He felt that if he did formalized loss prevention training on employee theft, he would be giving away the answers and ways for his employees to turn around and steal from him.
I had to stop and think about it for a minute. Yes. It is possible that an employee might get ideas on how to defraud his employer after going through that sort of loss prevention workshop. What my peer didn’t think about is that the employee was probably already toying with the idea of theft, or had already tested the waters in their own way.
The flip side is that when you take your team of employees to a loss prevention workshop, you are actually showing them why they should not steal. These seminars are designed to create more eyes that will be aware of what is going on at the store level.
If an employee is thinking about stealing, they know that there are more people aware of methods and red flags- making it more likely to be caught. By sending your employees to training also sends a message that you are raising awareness of all facets of your business and that employee theft will not be tolerated.

Using Your Money- Clothing Security Tags

When you diligently add clothing security to all of the new merchandise comes into the store, you reduce the likelihood that shoplifters will target your store. This is particularly important of you sell on trend clothing and brands as a major art of your shrink losses can be due to theft from fashionistas who are filling their closets on your dime.
To increase the urgency and perceived need for a customer to buy more product, retailer’s focus on the next season’s incoming merchandise. Touted as the latest and greatest, customers are being lured back to by more clothing. From email campaigns to in store displays, retailer’s focus on the latest fashion to come off the delivery trucks and make sure their customers are intimately aware of what fashion trend is now in stock.
Unfortunately, these marketing lures also bring in the shoplifter who is trying to stay ahead of the fashion trends by always having the latest styles and products. The sad reality is that for those that cannot afford the clothing, they turn to shoplifting to fill their closets.
Clothing security tags prevents your store from being targeted by shoplifters. When used consistently, these security tags on clothes serve as a warning that each season’s merchandise is protected.
Shoplifters will know that there is no point in even checking to see if the current season’s merchandise has been secured, because you are one step ahead of them.

Look The Other Direction- Internal Theft

Internal theft, by ways of refund fraud, is hard to pinpoint because an employee theft investigation starts out as inventory losses, not as cash losses.
Here’s how it works: an employee who has access to conduct refunds selects items of merchandise for a fraudulent refund. The merchandise might be an item that is in the area because a customer refunded it earlier in the day.
During employee theft investigations, we have also seen employees write down item numbers from merchandise that they want to refund for a specific reason.
Maybe they know the item is below a certain dollar amount that won’t be researched. Perhaps it is an item that is shoplifted frequently, so the employee thinks any losses they create will be lumped in with the rest of the shoplifting losses.
However they pick the items to refund, the next step is the same. They will refund the item, forge any signatures that are required, and take the money that was refunded.
It could be cash or a store credit, or even a refund back to his or her own credit card- depending upon what the POS system will allow them to do. Because the refund is processed through the POS, there will not be a drawer shortage to alert you to the fraud. Instead, you will see inventory losses as a direct result of the refund.
By researching internal theft from inventory losses, you might be able to follow the path back to their refunds.

Billions Lost To Organized Retail Crime- Retail Theft Prevention

National estimates are around 30 billion dollars worth of losses at the hands of Organized Retail Theft crimes. You heard that right, 30 BILLION dollars in losses. That is massive. It is also indicative that these crimes are so widespread that they will affect every retailer, both large and small.
While major retailers have multiple locations and larger quantities of desirable merchandise making them attractive to organized retail crime, they also have more security and theft prevention resources available to help combat those thefts and inventory losses.
Smaller retailers, who may not have the most desirable selection of merchandise, may actually find themselves more prone to organized retail crime because their stores are more vulnerable without inventory security devices, or other EAS and camera systems.
The biggest take away is that organized retail crime will seek out the greatest path of least resistance. If you have any merchandise at all that can be resold, or otherwise profited from, and you have minimal store security, you can bet that organized retail crime will be a factor in your store.
The point of organized retail crime is to take advantage of retail merchandise for their benefit. These thieves do not care if they get their haul in one big job, or in multiple smaller ones.

The Name Game- Pre Employment Screening

Criminal background checks should be an essential part of a company’s standard pre employment screening. The results can be a red flag for the company so they can make a better-informed decision about the candidate they want to hire.
Every time my brother applies for a new job, he dreads the part where the potential employer runs criminal background checks. Mostly because he knows that his search results will show up with a laundry list of convictions from crimes committed in various states. The problem is, there is someone else living in a different state that has the same name and date of birth as my brother. This other person is the true owner of the criminal history that shows up on my brother’s criminal background checks.
He first found out about this problem after interviewing for a job and then receiving a rejection letter in the mail from this company. They stated that he did not divulge his record to them on the application, and based on the convictions he was ineligible for hire.
He then had to go through several other steps to prove that the records were not his and he had never even been to the states in which the arrests had happened. The proof came from the information found on his driver’s license such as race, hair and eye color, and the photo. Once matched to the mug shots and the arrest records, my brother was cleared and offered the position.

A Different Back, A Different Lock- Alpha Jewel Lok

Alpha Security Alpha Jewel Lok are hard to defeat locks that secure earrings onto the jewelry cards, preventing a shoplifter from easily stealing the merchandise. The three kinds of locks are for hoop earrings, stud earrings and French wire earrings. Each lock designed with the specific characteristics of each earring in mind.
The stud earring locks not only attach the earring to the jewelry card by securing the post on the back, but they also incorporate a “parking” area for the backs to be kept. As anyone who wears a stud earring knows, the back is just as essential as the actual earring is when you are wearing them.
The French wires attach onto the wire with a low profile design that cannot be seen from the front. This helps keep a better visual appearance for these often flashy or highly decorative earrings. Hoop earrings also need their own style of Alpha Jewel Loks. Just like the other two styles, the hoop posts are secured to the card from the back providing a secure deterrent from shoplifters.
Retail anti theft devices designed by Alpha Security to prevent shoplifting are very well thought out creating a simple and effective solution.

Pick Your Mix – Bottle Security

With the increase in popularity for IPA and special brew beers and ciders, many liquor and grocery stores are offering mixed boxes of bottles. For one price, a customer can pick their own six-pack or case of beers, as long as they are from a certain cooler, or designated area of the store.
The problem can arise if a customer starts to take bottles from other areas, or out of pre packed cases. When those cases or packs are tampered with, the store cannot sell the case as full. They might not be able to sell it as a case at all. They are then left with a shortage on that particular item, and might have to take a margin loss by selling the bottles cheaper in a mix pack.
It is not just beers that can fall victim to a customer’s ingenuity and creative picking. Wine bottles are also sold by the case in some stores. The same rules apply in which the bottles of wine are from specific vendors, or comparable price points.
Any store that allows these customer mixed packs understands that it is a great selling point. Customers can try a variety of tastes and brands that they might not other wise purchase. It allows customers to try out multiple varieties without making a large commitment to something they might not like.

Follow The Lines- Checkpoint Security Systems

We had a shoplifter in our store over the weekend. We knew that he was up to something based on his actions. He had entered the store and then bee lined over to our denim wall. Instead of looking at the tags, or the waistbands of the jeans- presumably to find his size- he followed the leg of each pair of jeans down to the end. What he was checking for was electronic article surveillance tags (EAS) commonly called security tags.
The shoplifter was trying to find pairs of jeans that did not have these EAS tags on them. He wanted to be able to steal the jeans without being conspicuously identified by an alarm sounding as he exited the store. If he found a pair of jeans without the tags, he had a better chance of making a clean escape.
What the shoplifter did not realize was that his actions actually made him more obvious. He was not exhibiting behaviors that most paying shoppers do. Shoppers look for their size of jeans, which is found somewhere, near the waistband, not at the bottom of the leg. Even if a shopper picks out a few jeans with similar sizes to try on, they still are more focused on the sizing found near the waistband.

What Works Best- Loss Prevention Training

There are many different kinds of loss prevention training. Some are focused on shoplifting identification and shoplifting prevention. Other loss prevention training is centered on employee theft. Still others revolve around general store safety and operational best practices. Each focus can be the cause of major financial staring on small retailers.
When you understand what your store specific concerns are, it is easier to find a loss prevention workshop that will fit your needs. Why would you and your employees want to waste your time in loss prevention seminars that are too generalized or do not focus enough on your particular problems or worries?
The smart decision is to work with the training facilitators to make sure they understand exactly what your expectations are. There is no point in spending your time and your hard earned money on loss prevention training that will not produce a return on your investment later on.
One of the most commonly sought after loss prevention seminars are ones that focus on shoplifting. Regardless of your location, client base and product assortment, shoplifting can happen to you. Because of the frequency, these seminars are best suited for a wide array of retailers. Most shoplifters exhibit the same basic strategies and methods. The prevention tactics therefore are equally as universal as the crimes they are deterring and eliminating.

No Need To Wine About It- Bottle Security

Wine bottles need the same bottle security that liquor and spirits do. They are susceptible to theft and sampling. When wine bottles are left out in the open for sales and customer satisfaction, they still need to have bottle locks to protect them.
Alpha Security has created bottle locks dedicated to wine bottle protection. With a high level of security, the 1 alarm wine guard bottle cap is a perfect solution. It takes great pride in its ease of use- a one-handed removal process helps ensure an efficient check out process. It is the same one-handed application process that makes it quicker and less frustrating for your employees to put the bottle locks on from the start.
From a security standpoint, the wine guard fits over 90 percent of wine bottles currently being sold on the market. The 1 Alarm means the locks can be used in conjunction with an in store EAS system. There is also a dual spring locking mechanism that further ensures a strong lock between the bottle and the lock, making it less likely that the lock can be pried off and defeated. The cap grips in two separate spots for the best fit possible.
Additionally, the wine guard goes beyond just bottle security from theft. There are the benefit denial properties. Finally, the clear cap allows the tax and stamp information to be easily read and audited.
