Not Quite The Right Size- Alpha Spider Wrap

On a recent consultation, I was talking to a small business owner who wanted to add colognes and fragrances to their product assortments. They thought it would be a great way to increase their ticket averages, and not needing significant retail space to merchandise the product effectively. Most recruiters and hiring managers will tell you with an overwhelming response that the single biggest reason why employees come to them for a new position, or a new job altogether, is because they feel underappreciated.

When employees are not appreciated they will look for somewhere else to go. If their efforts are not being rewarded through praise or a raise they begin to question why they should even bother putting in the effort.

This is where most employees look at one of two options. They will either eliminate the position they are in through a lateral transfer, promotion, or leave the company entirely, or they will develop their own compensation for their troubles and hard work.

In The Blink Of An Eye- Checkpoint Tags

It happened in the blink of an eye. It took less than ninety seconds and the thieves were in, out, and gone. Had it not been for the security alarm the thieves set off, we may not have even noticed the theft until it was way to late to do anything about it.

I worked at a major upscale department store. We had several entrance doors in our location, and I had gone to start locking them all up as we closed down for the night. As I was walking to lock up the last door, I heard the security alarms go off. I looked up and saw five guys with their arms loaded with expensive handbags running out the door. The security tags on the handbags set the alarm off notifying us of the problem.

Unfortunately, the security tags did not deter these professional thieves. They knew they were going to be fast getting in and out, and would set the alarm off as they went.

Too Much Inventory- Bottle Security

I went to my local liquor store the other day to get a particular kind of beer. They didn’t carry it because they were trying to stay in stock with the ever-changing flavors of local brews and IPAs. It was even harder for him because he had to devote so much of his capital to renewing his stolen inventory due to his lack of bottle security.

I ended up doing a consultation for him and realized that he was spending more on replenishing stolen product than what he realized. It wasn’t that he had so many seasonal brews monopolizing his inventory capital it was the stolen product.

We immediately developed a plan to keep a secondary entrance closed during business hours. He was propping the door open to generate foot traffic. What he didn’t know was that he also opened the door to people walking in and stealing the bottles closest to the door. After making a few shoplifting apprehensions, we discovered there were several residents of a nearby apartment complex that had gotten word that this was the place to go for free booze.

A Long Talk Over Coffee- Wardrobing

I was at a local coffee shop this morning when I overheard the conversation at the next table. Two ladies were talking about the interview one of them had later. Next thing I knew, the conversation turned to wardrobing.

One of the ladies was expressing her disgust at the other coffee shop patrons who were walking to closely to her with their cups of coffee. She talked about how mad she would be if someone spilt even a drop of coffee on her new outfit.

At first I sympathized thinking that if I had bought a new outfit to impress a potential employer, I would not want to show up with coffee stains all over it. Then I realized that the lady was upset because she needed to keep the outfit nice so she could return it to the store the next day.

It actually made me pretty disgusted, and I wanted to “accidentally” spill my coffee on her, but what good would that do? The lady was so open about her wardrobing decision that this very clearly was not her first time doing so. Unfortunately, this also would not be her last.

Wardrobing retail was part of her lifestyle. It was just something she had done for so long, that she really didn’t see anything wrong with it.

As a retailer, it is our job not to try and change the perception of these customers. It is our job to eliminate the opportunity within our own store for wardrobing to take place.

Ownership and Understanding- Loss Prevention Training

Employee training methods are constantly changing and evolving. The purpose of employee training however remains the same: to promote employee ownership and understanding. Specifically to loss prevention training, employees who have a deeper understanding are more likely to take ownership of these processes and actively reduce shrinkage in your stores.

Loss prevention training takes many forms. Some of them are self-monitored, such as computer based learning programs, or handbook reviews. Some loss prevention training comes directly from supervisors in the store. These kinds of trainings center around store specific policies and procedures designed to minimize risk and exposure. Others are aimed toward store operations and how to handle day-to-day tasks and assignments.

Lastly, loss prevention seminars can take place. They might be geared towards the entire store, or it might be for all of the management staff for a multi location company. Either way, the end result is still to train your employees so they have a more through understanding of how certain actions affect a store’s shrink and profit lines.

It is also a way for employees to understand what to look for and why thieves act the way they do- which is a deterrent in and of itself for employee theft. The end result is that employees who are knowledgeable are more likely to react to situations they are comfortable with a positive result.

Move The Marker Forward- Retail Anti Theft Devices

We have all seen the signs of shoplifting safe havens. Over the Line- Anti Shoplifting

Before a shoplifter considers stealing from a store, they first need to have a motive for doing so. Part of effective anti shoplifting strategies is in knowing and understanding how a person’s motivation drives them over the line to commit a crime.

Specific motives can vary widely amongst shoplifters, but a safe generalization is that they are trying to get something for nothing.

A shoplifter’s motivation can come from greed- wanting more than what they can afford. Maybe they are trying to afford the latest and greatest tech gadget. Maybe they are trying to keep up with the most current fashion trends.

A shoplifter’s motivation can also be driven by necessity; they simply cannot afford to purchase something like food or diapers. Maybe their debts are out of control and they steal because there is nothing left. Maybe they lost their job and have nothing.

When this motivation to steal is coupled with the opportunity to commit the crime with a lowered risk of getting caught, you can be sure that they will make an attempt to steal. By understanding this cycle of events, you can gear your anti shoplifting strategies and programs toward effective ways to stop shoplifting.
