What Is In Your Bag – Employee Theft

An employee bag check is an operational control designed to reduce and eliminate employee theft. Employees are required to have their personal belongings searched prior to their leaving on a lunch break or at the end of their shift. Depending on the specific process outlined, an employee bag check can require multiple steps or parts to it.
The most basic bag check is that all employees have someone look in their personal bags and purses any time the employee leaves the store. This should include everyone, including managers. A closing manager should have another employee look in their bag before they leave. It is both a deterrent for the managers and leading by example. Having a manager’s bag checked shows that no one is beyond the reach of this policy.
Some companies order a clear purse for employees to use while at work.  It is another way to deter employee theft. Everyone can see exactly what is inside the bag from any angle. This may or may not work for your store. Some employees may feel like their privacy is violated because everyone, not just a manger, can see the employee’s personal items. These bags are also an additional expense that may cost you more than they are worth.
Along with just having an employee’s bag checked, purchases should also be checked against the receipt. Employees may be tempted to add additional items to their purchase after the transaction is done, thinking no one will question a bag of merchandise that they saw the employees pay for earlier in the shift.

Safety In Your Stores- Retail Theft Prevention

If customers will not enter a store, there is no way to sell them anything. If a customer comes in, but rushes to get out, any carefully laid out merchandising plans, sales and promotions will do no good to generate additional sales- the customer is simply oblivious to them.
When customers are avoiding being inside of a store for any length of time, the culprit if frequently due to an unsafe feeling. When customers do not feel safe, they are less likely to spend money and potentially ill stop shopping at a particular location.
What you can do to prevent avoidance of this kind is to create a safe environment for your customers and your employees.
Make sure parking lot lights are on (and working) when it starts to get dark. Use EAS tags and other kinds of theft prevention like cameras and domes to deter shoplifters and other criminals from even entering your store.
Build a relationship with your local police department, so they routinely stop by to say hi and make sure you are safe.
Preventing shoplifting theft is a perfect way to help build a safe reputation within your store. Customers are more likely to see someone stealing than employees are. If these customers feel unsafe, they will take their money and shop someplace else.

Won’t Slow You Down- Alpha Security

When a customer is ready to check out, the last thing they want to do is to wait in line unnecessarily. Even if the customer understands the need for bottle security, they are not prepared to have their time wasted because of it.
That means bottle security needs to be quick, and efficient as not to impede the customer’s check out time. One of the best solutions is to use the Alpha Security EASy Bottles for your preferred brand of bottle locks.
Alpha Security has worked tirelessly to develop bottle locks that can be removed quickly at the point of sale. There are no complicated pieces to take off and separate into different bins to be reused later. The locks are one piece that is removed with a detacher key.
The detacher key can be either an attached key at the check out counter, or can be a handheld key assigned to each employee who needs one. This helps you control exactly who has access to removing the bottle locks and who doesn’t.
It also helps you determine which locks you would like to use in your store. Most of the different locks are universal to the detacher keys available. This allows you even more freedom to have multiple kinds of locks specialized for your different liquor bottle inventory, without the need for multiple kinds of detacher keys to slow your and your customers down at checkout time.

Part Time Increase- Employee Background Checks

For the last few years, many retailers and other businesses have started a new hiring trend. Instead of hiring a balance of full time and part time employees, these companies are hiring more part time employees. Because these companies are looking to make less of an investment in these employees, many of them are hired without pre employment screening.
Hiring part time employees has many benefits for both small businesses and larger companies. It is easier to schedule several part time hours in a day, instead of having full time employees with longer shifts that might overlap in unnecessary times.  With shorter time requirements, it is easier to schedule more employees for a few hours at a time, when they are actually needed.
Part time employees do not need a guarantee of hours, so when business is slow, you can easily decrease your payroll. Many companies also do not offer benefits to part time employees, another huge financial impact.
The downside is that with no hour guarantees, and few to no benefits, many part time employees only do the absolute minimum work necessary to keep their jobs. Because of this lack of engagement, part time employees are also more likely to cause theft issues, or ignore shoplifters.
If pre employment screening and other employee background checks are not completed, the likelihood of part time employees causing losses becomes even greater.
Employee background checks might indicate which part time employees are most likely to be disengaged, and potentially cause losses to your business.

Development Of Assets- Loss Prevention Training

Investment groups are becoming notorious for buying up retailers and small businesses with one clear intention- creating unmatched profits and massive payouts for the top-level executives, as well as for the investment firm.
One of the main changes these investment firms will make is in staffing and payroll reductions. They reduce the employee hours and benefits to about as minimum as what they can get away with. Depending upon which side of the coin you are on, this is either a completely brilliant or completely inane business strategy. The deciding factor falls within what you want the longevity of your business to be.
For the companies being sold to investment firms, many will not be around in five to ten years. They will be sold, or may go under completely after all of the assets have been striped of any redeeming value. The longevity of the company is not important, the short-term profits are.
For companies who are looking for longevity, treating employees as assets to be nurtured and developed is essential. The more training employees have, they more they will feel in control, and valued. They are more willing to go the extra mile for the business, and want to further their own growth and development as an employee.
Employee development can take the form of computer based learning, seminars, workshops, and one on one development.

Why Do We Need Protection? – Clothing Security

Why do we need protection for our clothing inventory? Who is going to take our merchandise? These two questions come up frequently when I consult for small businesses that are not convinced that they need clothing security.
The first question is why? What they are really asking is why they should spend money on clothing security, when they might not actually need it. I answer them by explaining that clothing security is there for two reasons. One is to deter shoplifters from taking clothing and other items from your stores. The next is to stop the theft that might be taking place already, that you are not aware of.
Next we talk about who is going after clothing. Depending on what kind of clothing you carry, the attraction is different for specific kinds of shoplifters.
Some shoplifters are specifically looking for designer brands that they can resell easily on ebay, or in a flea market. Others are looking for personal usage of the merchandise. Whether they can’t afford, or simply don’t want to pay for new clothes, shoplifters often steal so they have something new to wear. Same thing goes for employees.
In any case, clothing security tags have been proven to reduce inventory shrink numbers by as much as 85 percent- more than what the cost of a system would be in most stores.

Out Of Control- Prevent Shoplifting

Do you feel like you are slowly (or quickly) loosing control of your business? If your stores were once profitable, but now you are having unexplained decreases in profit, or revenue, you might be having a shoplifting problem.
Shoplifting is an extremely common problem that affects every retailer and shop at some point. Depending on how bad the theft is, how rapidly or how high of a dollar loss per incident, makes a difference in how fast you can respond to preventing theft.
Sometimes, when losses are of a small dollar per incident, it makes it harder to track or identify where the problem is coming from. You end up racking your brain to find out why your inventory numbers are off, or why revenue is starting to take a slight decrease.
If you are experiencing minimal shortages, it could take several months, or even a year to determine that theft is taking place. In that amount of time, all of the small losses add up to a bigger financial decrease. Preventing theft takes a look at ways to prevent even the smallest of losses before they become a big problem.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Do You Know Your Inventory – Bottle Security

It is not uncommon for liquor stores to have bypassed using electronic article surveillance as an inventory security measure. These EAS devices and systems, while effective at reducing inventory losses from theft, can be seen as an unnecessary expense.
The truth is, without having an actual estimate done, and cross referenced against your current inventory accuracy and merchandise costs, you can never really understand how much you might need an inventory security system.
The first step is to determine what your losses actually are. If you were not in the habit of taking an inventory, now would be a good time to start. Many small businesses that do not take an inventory on a regular (semi annual or annual) basis are often surprised at just how off their numbers are in their heads versus what they actually do physically have on hand.
The important piece of doing an inventory is in knowing your accuracy. If you have an accurate inventory, you can effectively tell what is missing. You will be able to resolve the theft issues faster, and with greater certainty.
I have been called to many locations that swear they have a theft issue, only to find out that the product was actually missing due to miss management. When an accurate inventory took place, they discovered that the shoplifters were taking a completely different item that they were completely unaware of.

Online Prevention- Checkpoint Tags

Like many retailers, you may be starting to push an online shopping experience for your existing customers. An online store is also a great way to reach a whole new customer base. Unless you are doing extremely well, you are probably not at a point where you need a separate and distinct shipping warehouse to fulfill your online orders. That means you are fulfilling orders out of your existing stock, from your existing brick and mortar locations.
That makes it even more important to make sure your employees are packaging orders correctly. They need to ensure the product’s size, color, brand and quantity are what have actually been ordered. Your employees also need to make sure that any security tags have been removed or deactivated.
Based upon the product being shipped effects the potential for customer service fail when the customer receives the product. For instance, if a customer orders an item of clothing and the hard security tag has been left on, the customer cannot effectively wear that item. They have to send the item back and wait for a reshipment of that item.
Soft tags are less likely to cause a major issue if they are not deactivated before shipping, but they may still cause some problems for the customer.

A Two Part System- Clothing Security Tags

In order for clothing security to be effective, you have to have a certain level of quality in your security resources and tools. I had a camera system once that spent more time waiting for a service tech to come fix it, than I did actually using the system. I ended up not relying on those cameras because I didn’t want to have to need them and then find out they weren’t working.
It was a cheap system that had been pieced together over the years. It wasn’t until we upgraded to a total camera system package did I truly feel I could rely on the cameras as part of my clothing security system.
The same thing goes with our clothing security tags. I have seen some retailers use cheaply made, and cheaply sold, clothing security tags. Boy, do these not work well for anything. If I was to look closely at the tags, I could see the actual seam in the middle of the hard shell. On some of them, the seam was actually breaking apart.
Any shoplifter with an ounce of persistence could easily pry the two sides apart with a screwdriver or other tool. Once the two sides are pried apart, the shoplifter has access to the inner locking mechanism, which is what holds the pin in place on your clothing. Once the pin is removed, the clothing security tags are rendered completely ineffective.
