The criminal mind is an ever changing, constantly evolving scheme. Just when you think you have them beat, along comes something completely unexpected. The current trend in theft is to attack where they least expect it to be. Hackers are targeting systems that are seemingly less obvious targets. As a result there is a lower level of security. Retail theft prevention is starting to notice a similar trend.
Shoplifters are starting to target less obvious merchandise. The theory is that retailers are concentrating their resources to stop shoplifting of high end/ high priced, designer, and well-known brands. Shut Them Out- Bottle Security

One of the advantages a state run liquor store has is the ability to limit those can come into their store. They have the ability to mandate that no one under the age of 21 can step foot into the store. It’s a pretty effective form of bottle security, eliminating the risk of theft by minors.
Unfortunately, for many of us who are left, we are not just a liquor store. We are stores that sell liquor, amongst other items. It is not as practical for us to completely eliminate the under 21 crowd, as many of them do buy our other merchandise. If we shut them out completely, we will loose our other sales.
What we can do is take their ideas for bottle security and incorporate them into our store layouts. By creating a store in store area, we can limit which customers enter this now restricted area.  
Some options are to completely close an area off and have a door securing the space from the rest of the store. It would be more expensive, but it would also easier to regulate. Another, less costly way, is to section an area off using existing shelving runs and aisles. This uses the supplies you already have, while still delineating a spot for your liquor to be sold from.
Even adding a designated area that can closely be monitored by where your employees normally are stationed (such as by the registers) help the employees maintain visual bottle security on the merchandise. I would not suggest merchandising the liquor right by an exit door, since it could be a prime target for grab and run thefts.

Is That One Or Two- Clothing Security

We have had more success with selling swim items separately, instead of as a two-piece set. Customers can buy the correct top and bottom sizes they need, and are much happier with their purchase, decreasing the amount of returns we have on these items.
We also have fewer issues with miss-matched sets. We don’t have to worry about customers taking two sets in different sizes and piecing together the sizes they need, leaving us with a set that is not the same size, and almost impossible to sell.
We also have a better margin selling two pieces for slightly more than what we would sell the set as before. This gives more wiggle room for sales and promotions. It also helps offset some of our shrink losses from shoplifting, since swimwear is always a high theft item.
I had an incident recently where a woman had come into the store to buy a new swim set. She thought that she could be sneaky and basically, con the cashier. This woman picked out her two-piece swimsuit and put them on the same hanger. Then she pulled the price tag off of one of the pieces. She was trying to make it look like the pieces were to be sold as a set, instead of individually.
The cashier caught the error and rang her up for both pieces, instead of just one.

What To Do? – Prevent Shoplifting

One of my employees was talking to me about a shoplifting incident they saw, but they didn’t know what to do about it. She was watching a customer trying on different pairs of earrings and went over to offer her assistance.
The woman quickly said she didn’t need anything, turned around and left. My employee started to clean up the mess this customer left behind. We don’t have a real good inventory control system or EAS devices designed specifically for jewelry and accessories.
The woman had taken several pairs of earrings off the cards, and everything was in a jumble on the counter. As my employee sorted through everything, she noticed that there were two pairs of earrings missing, and the customer looked like she was wearing one of them.
It was a difficult position for my employee to be in. She was probably right in her suspicions that the customer had walked off with at least one if not two pairs of our earrings.
Because we didn’t actually see what happened from the beginning it was too hard to actually tell if this was just a repeat customer who had purchased the earrings previously, or if she did steal them.

One of the challenges facing retailers who sell clothing is trying to prevent a grab and run theft. A grab and run is about as self-explanatory as you can get. The thieves, as there are typically more than one, come into a store, pick up a large quantity of the same merchandise, and run out the door into the waiting get away car.

Like An Old Friend- Loss Prevention Workshop

Everyone has that one person in their lives that they look up to and frequent for insight and advice. This person is usually experienced, wizened and has seen enough of the world to have a different, and useful perspective on any given situation. These are the mentors we rely on for advice in our love lives, financial matters, and other personal questions.
Hopefully, we also have a mentor like that in our work lives, not just in our personal lives. This should be someone who has a greater insight to different aspects and topics of our business than we do. It should also be someone who has valuable insight based off of his or her own experiences.
A mentor like this is particularly important when it comes to loss prevention and store security. The business acumen needed for these areas can’t easily be learned simply from reading up on the topics. Having a mentor, especially one that has personally encountered many of the potential security situations, helps you become that much more knowledgeable.

Double Up- Prevent Shoplifting

My store apprehended a shoplifter recently using a rather unusual method to conceal his merchandise. If it wasn’t for our retail anti theft devices to prevent shoplifting, we might not have discovered what was going on.
This was a situation where we didn’t catch on to this particular shoplifter right away. We actually had several interactions with him before we realized what was going on.
He came into our store and used a wheelchair with one of our handheld shopping basket in his lap. He would go about his business and come to the register to pay for the items. No matter how diligent my cashiers were when they rang him up; the EAS alarm was set off when he left.

Ignoring Your Gut Feelings-Employee Theft

A small business owner was talking to me about his concerns with one of his employees. There were major discrepancies with his store bank accounts and his accounts receivable never seemed to balance out. He suspected that something wasn’t right, and there was only one employee who was responsible for those accounts. Even though he didn’t outright say the words, he hinted that he was concerned about employee theft.
All of the arrows seemed to point in one very obvious direction- this employee was stealing. The owner, however, did not want to believe that was the case. The employee had been with him for about seven years, and he trusted her completely. That was why she had been given a position with so much responsibility and access to financial means.
This employee was leaving the company and then moving across the country. They had been planning this move for about six or seven months at this point, and had just a few short weeks left. Even though this owner had suspected for a while that this employee theft was going on, he just now wanted to do something about it.
I let him know that whatever he decided to do, he needed to do it quickly. Employee theft cases are much harder to prosecute and recover money from if the employee has left the company. Many judges will view this sort of employee theft investigation as a form of retaliation due to the employees notice to leave the company.
