A Grazer in the Field – Bottle Security

My liquor bottle security and theft of alcohol. Well, this one had nothing to do with alcohol or bottle security.

This particular liquor store owner had been smart enough to use bottle locks for his liquor bottle security – specifically the EASy Bottle by Alpha Security. His inventory was right in line where he needed it to be, at least in the alcohol department. It seemed strange that he was ordering mixers more frequently than normal.

After a closer look, it turned out that his employees were grazers. A grazer is an employee who grazes throughout their shift. They will pick up random drinks, like water or sodas to consume during the course of their shift. They might also take items found at the registers like packs of gum, or chips, candy bars and crackers to snack on.

He kept a reach in cooler filled with mixers of various types, which also included some non-alcoholic drinks like sodas and energy drinks. Because these are such commonplace items, they are not as easily identifiable when an employee takes them directly out of the store’s inventory, versus bringing them from home.

The best course of action is to require employees to not allow food on the sales floor, and maintain a close watch on your inventory, just as you would with the rest of your bottle security.
